Better Bathurst Initiative

Bathurst Street represents the western border of our catchment area. From Lawrence to Wilson, it is a unique neighbourhood with many charms but it has also been long-neglected and has fallen into a state of disrepair. Our City Councillor Mike Colle has taken on the task of bringing the community and City together in a joint effort to preserve the cultural community history of Bathurst Street, as well as improving and revitalizing it so that we can make it a better and safer place for all.

At a Town Hall held on February 25, 2019, numerous issues were raised, including: planning for youth and seniors, the need for better lighting and street art, outdoor cafes, increased green space, improving walkability, needing more sitting areas, and traffic flow and congestion.

To address these issues, Councillor Colle’s office organized four sub-committees each with a focus on a different aspect of the Better Bathurst initiative:

  • Pedestrian Safety

  • Public Realm

  • Environment (i.e. expanding natural green spaces and sustainability)

  • Security

MARCH 2021 UPDATE
The City is continuing infrastructure work along Bathurst Street and implementing elements of beautification/public realm improvements to achieve a “Better Bathurst” Street.
This project will be completed through a five phase approach beginning with the watermain on Bathurst between Ranee and Lawrence. Also in Phase 1 is resurfacing the roadway on Bathurst from Carmichael to Lawrence and the adjacent roads of Baycrest between Ameer and Bathurst.

Phase 1: Start Date – June 28th, 2021

Phase 5: End Date – June 20th, 2022

Some of the notable public realm and street improvements through this project are to:

  • Implement proposed neighbourhood improvements such as permeable pavers, enhanced swales, planting additional trees, street furniture and better lighting.

  • Curb alignment changes at Bathurst Street and Brooke Avenue.

  • Complete traffic signal modifications to meet current AODA requirements and install overhead detection (all intersections within the construction limits).

  • Resurface the roadways.
